I read the news today, oh boy. And I was struck by just how much good America is doing this world. For example, Google, Facebook and Twitter all reported revenues and user data this past fortnight. No surprise: All earn radically more per American than from the rest of the world.

Also no surprise: All are aggressively seeking to connect the rest of the world.

Essentially, America is subsidizing the connectivity of the planet.

Is this wise?

I mean, I love how America leads the world, improves the world, and empowers those who have long had little opportunity. Still, I’d rather this not come at the expense of our losing out.

With everyone connected, will that mean a larger pool of workers — all ready to undercut one another? I don’t know. I hope for the best and assume that will happen. But I do think we need to be vigilant about the ramifications of what we subsidize.

Plus, we deserve something for our efforts. These are American companies using mostly American-earned dollars to improve the world. We — Americans — should be rewarded for this. How about a premium Facebook or Google or Twitter service, for example. How about as thanks, Twitter does not charge any American to be verified but instead provides this service for free?

Hey. Just thinking outside the box.
