How far can we go back? How long until what’s gone now is always gone?
Only 200 years ago, America’s beautiful Appalachian country was filled with forests, towering trees, mountain lions, fruit, bison, all now gone, animals killed, fauna starved, trees cut down, coal stripped from below.
Can that be brought back?
Our smartest, most well-connected insist that history is on their side, the urban, the mobile, the degreed, frontline-linked to the global economy, fueled by data, media, consumption, an embrace of the non-traditional.
Different worlds, alternate realities.
I think of my dreams.
My dreams rarely look past. I suppose they might look forward, certainly they look elsewhere.
Outside my brain impacts my dreams, no doubt, providing the visceral foodstuffs, an image palette, but when does it take over?
Resist, if you wish it.
The Bible is a makers guide and we are, through design or circumstance, by divine intervention or clawing, human persistence, creating — at the very least, replicating — the same magic and powers contained in the Bible.
Dreams move us. Soon, literally. Watch.
Matthew repeatedly states that dreams were implanted, causing the person to act — and always for their benefit.
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
On coming to the house, (the 3 kings) saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.” So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.
God’s power, made real through dreams. Soon, we will do the same. There is a persistent fear that some, maybe all humans will trap themselves inside a virtual reality, a fake world so enticing they won’t leave.
I expect a similar reality — delivered through our dreams. Warn us in a dream, direct us in a dream, alter our life through a dream.
There’s something else.
What of these prophets and prophecies mentioned in these few Biblical passages from Matthew?
Is that today’s AI — speaking to us, like Alexa or Siri, (magically) predicting what we will do next, where we will go next, who we will meet?
We are constructing god-like powers for ourselves, but maybe not always with everyone’s benefit or righteousness in mind. How will you guard against those that attempt to control your dreams?
