The $100 smartphone
Apple has little to fear, at least for the next few years, from Android. What Android will first destroy is:
- Nokia
- Microsoft
- Non-mobile web
- Local advertising
My predictions for 2016, made last year, assumed 1 billion smartphones by then. I've said 2-3 billion smartphones, not feature phones, smartphones, by the end of the decade. These are likely conservative estimates. The new iPod Touch can be transformed into a advanced smartphone slash portable media device and priced under $300, this year.
Now we have the $100 smartphone: Huawei Ideos. In fact, they may price this over $100, probably $150. It uses Android 2.2 and is almost available for sale worldwide.
I have not yet scored this smartphone.

missing giant and growing INTEL
Submitted by ben kownack (not verified) on 5 September, 2010 - 11:07.I do agree with 80% of your smartphone projections, but INTEL with MEEGO / Qt may be the dark horse to watch and they are promising not to cheat or manipulate the market any more arr arr
Thanks for the comment
Submitted by brian s hall on 5 September, 2010 - 12:15.I look forward to playiong with MeeGo. And despite their talk of focusing on the "pillars" of security and software services, Intel understands their chips need to be on wireless. That is the future.
But...
I think this is a new world, completely different from the past. Intel will be one player of many. Sort of like Microsoft. These companies are built on making the most money, setting all the rules, creating all the standards, and having all the talent. It's in their board room, permeates their staff meetings, alters their daily work. I do not think they can thrive, maybe not even exist, in this new world.
