Hong Kong
[1 April 2010]
First time I flew into Hong Kong, I hadn't made it through the airport before being accosted by a man who wasn't a licensed taxi driver; he grabbed my bags and I followed. What the hell, it was on the company's dime and those were the dot com years.
He was rather chatty but clammed up and got a tad angry when I noted that the entire city looked it was ready to fall in a major earthquake. How was I to know he'd take it so badly. After that, what struck me, and this was pre-China ownership, was just how much money was flowing through that place -- and how quick vendors were to haggle over cash (which I guess was easier to hide from the man).
Long story short, Hong Kong is an amazing city. And despite Singapore and Japan and Korea and China's love for the mainland, I expect the city to do very well as we transition to a smartpone-driven, hyperglobal, real-time economy. But, let's rank them according to my Great Leveling algorithm for cities...
