I would not expect FaceTime 3G or 4G anytime soon
I've been testing Skype video calling on iPhone versus FaceTime. In case you care. FaceTime video -- and audio -- quality is radically superior. The process is slightly simpler. No contest. FaceTime is better than Skype. Full stop.
Except on 3G.
FaceTime doesn't work on 3G (nor cross-platform). However, you can (theoretically) make video calls on Skype over 3G. The only downside is it doesn't work. Not really. Don't get me wrong. I love Skype. Even now, while it's owned by evil eBay overlords. Er, evil VC overlords. Dirt cheap calls, comparatively. Free Skype to Skype calls. Video calls. Now video calls on iPhone. What's not to love. The problem is in my tests, WiFi Skype to 3G Skype video calls, in an area with good, reliable 3G, gets you a shoddy video, delayed audio and, typically, a dropped call. If it doesn't drop, you'll wind up ending the call quickly since it's just not good enough.
3G to 3G? Don't bother.
Apple being Apple, magical revolution or no, the company probably won't get better quality video over 3G Not enough to satisfy their "user experience" quality requirement. Hopefully, since I love video calls, the coding, processing, video SDKs can all be better optimized, made more powerful. And work seamlessly over 4G. But video calls on 3G are like a pebble inside an expensive shoe. Quickly, you're gonna stop what you're doing, and toss it out. It's hard to believe the experience will improve much over existing networks.
